Opening

Curated by Dr. Laura Enriquez

The opening panels were designed to give context to attendees regarding the (Re)Writing Migration Stories and our intention to create a caring space for our collective healing.

Borders and immigration policies inflict legal violence, wounding those of us who are undocumented immigrants or who have undocumented loved ones. Sometimes it feels like paper cuts, small pricks of pain. Other times we are disemboweled, turned inside out.

As people impacted by immigration policy, we traveled to Mexico for the first time in a long time to heal and (re)build our connections to our country of origin. This exhibit documents our journeys in an attempt to empower our our selves and our communities.

Through written reflections and art, we explore two questions: What wounds has the border inflicted on us as members of immigration-impacted communities? How does (im)mobility across borders impact our identities and feelings of home?
